Urban Canopy is a transitional living unit that combines the elements of an arboreal lifestyle with a space that allows for both the parent and the kids to move through the space in an organic way that feels connected to the Earth.
Designed specifically for a single, recently incarcerated parent to re-unite with their two children as the project objective, the aim for this unit is to re-connect the parent and the kids while also connecting them to a more calming and natural way of living.
Re-Birth/ Growth
In forest ecology, canopy of a tree refers to the upper layer or habitat zone, formed by mature tree crowns, simply, the top area of a tree where arboreal animals reside. Arboreal animals are creatures who spend the majority of their lives in trees. They eat, sleep and play in the tree canopy.
Symbolism of Trees
As the seasons move into autumn and winter, trees will lose their leaves. However in spring, trees will slowly re-emerge and blossom to life. Much like the life cycle of trees, our lives can experience seasons of darkness and light, death and re-birth.
Connection
Trees symbolize togetherness and serves as a reminder that you are never alone or isolated, but rather that you are connected to the world. The roots of a tree dig deep and spread into the earth, and its branches reach up high up into the sky.
Through the entry level, guests have access to shops which sell the harvested products that are produced on the hydroponic tower. The farming room is where all the harvested products gets processed before taking their places on the shelves of the shop. The farming room is also connected to the kitchen right below it through a dumbwaider so the harvested products can be used in the restaurant.
There are 5 unit levels with each of them holding 4 units and a kids play room. The rooftop consists of harvested water tanks and filtration systems that gets connected to each units balcony. The lower level is 22’ below grade and is seperated to two parts; the residence storage/laundry area and the restaurant. The restaurant is accessible from the street.
The training center is meant for both the parents and kids to attend classes and join counseling. The second floor is a library for everyone to enjoy.
